Today was the LAST lecture I will ever have to sit through as a student nurse, it was somewhat bitter sweet. I think of all the lectures they definitely saved the best for last. They had a Dr. come and speak with us about palliative care. For those of you who do not know what that is, it is caring for the whole person and some may know it as "comfort" care, or end-of-life care/hospice care. This is a subject that is very near and dear to my heart, because both of my Grandmothers passed away with hospice care. Throughout my time working in the hospitals and nursing homes there is one thing I have learned about myself as a Nurse Aide & almost Nurse, I want my patients to be comfortable. There is nothing worse than having to sit and watch someone suffer. I believe that comfort not only comes from medications, but it comes from having someone good at "bedside" care as well. I think human touch, a kind word, or just simply sitting at someones side can sometimes be more comforting than giving a pill or a shot to ease the pain. I have a passion for palliative care & I think one day I may work in that direction.
